Everyone should get the opportunity to swing! Every child should have the memory of swinging to and fro on a swing set. However, for a child with special needs, swinging is not only a fun activity, it is helping the child develop.
Studies have shown that special needs children learn better and retain more information when being taught while swinging. A child may show signs of less anxiety, improved behavior, and more focus. Swinging while learning has also been found to aid in improved eye contact, response, and speech skills.
Sensory integration therapy often includes swinging, which has shown improvements of fine motor skills, balance, touch, and spatial awareness.
Playing on swings helps develop relationships. A shared play experience can improve imagination, communication, and interactions with others. It can provide a positive experience that develops empathy for others. Although a child may have special needs, they still need the opportunity to be a kid. Swinging can help develop socialization skills and promote healthy interaction with their peers.
The A1300 swing is made of durable rotational molded plastic. All of the hardware, excluding the chain, are made of stainless steel to prevent rust. The attachment points are reinforced to prevent breakage. Swing frame height is not required when ordering. The swing will come with chains to accommodate an 8’ swing frame height. The swing will come with a tamper-proof stainless steel shackle A5705 and special wrench A5750 to attach a separate chain to accommodate various frame heights. Please see the chart below for length of chain needed for frame heights. The reclining position of the swing is adjustable based on where the shackle is located on the chain.
The newly designed A1300 accessible swing seat offers physically challenged children the opportunity to swing. The new rotational-molded design offers exceptional strength and meets ADA Standards, as well as CPSC and ASTM Standards. The new design offers added support, wider sides, larger armrests and larger footrests. The adjustable chains allows for multiple reclining positions of the swing for added comfort and support.
The new design includes a yoke and a unique locking system. This yoke does not need to be detached in order to meet ASTM and CPSC head entrapment standards. If further support is required, an optional removable harness is available for purchase. This harness is meant to further secure the child and does not meet ASTM and CPSC standards for head entrapment and can cause a strangulation hazard. At no time should the harness be left on an unattended swing. American Swing Products will not assume liability for injuries caused by the optional harness.
With its partially reclined, body-embracing design and overhead yoke system, the A1300 offers special needs children a fun, safe, and comfortable ride.
**Installation, Safety, and Maintenance Instructions**
Please read and follow the precautions and instructions prior to installing, using, or maintaining the playground equipment. You can also call us at 1-800-433-2573 for more information, or go to http://www.cpsc.gov/cpscpub/pubs/325.pdf.
Although plastic may become as hot as metal, plastic has better insulation properties and does not transfer heat as quickly. This is due to the thermodynamic and lower heat transfer properties of plastic, making it the preferred choice for playground equipment over metal. The Consumer Product Safety Commission CPSC recommends plastic slides and surfaces in lieu of bare metal. In extreme temperatures and direct sunlight, plastic can still become hot enough to cause burns. For safety, parents and guardians alike must be present while the children are using the equipment at all times. Check playground surfaces and equipment for excessive heat prior to use. For more information, contact IPEMA headquarters at communications@ipema.org or by calling 1-717-238-1744.
Installation: Verify that the warning label is visible prior to installation. Additional warning labels are available for purchase, and information for these warning labels are included with your packing list. The seat is to be 18” off the ground to meet ASTM standards. Each seat comes installed with a V-chain 6’ long and an additional top chain 15” long for an 8’ frame height. For different frame heights, the top chain may be replaced with a longer chain. Please see chart below for more details. A tamper-proof stainless steel shackle A5705 and special wrench A5750 are included and can be relocated on the chain for adjustment of the reclining position of the seat. As per ASTM standards, the hangers must be spaced 30” from the end of the swing frame, and 24” apart for each swing on the frame. If you are not using shackle pendulum swing hangers, you will need to order two 2 S-hooks or two 2 additional A5725 shackles to attach the swing chain to the hanger.
Chain that is needed but must be ordered separately:
Frame Height | Chain Length | Amount of Chains required |
10′ | 2′ | 2 |
12′ | 4′ | 2 |
14′ | 6′ | 2 |
WARNING: Once an S-hook has been installed, they cannot be reopened/reused, and they will require replacement to avoid equipment failure and possible injury. S-hooks need to be closed within .04 to meet ASTM Safety Standards. This can be accomplished with our S-Hook Channel Lock Pliers A8000 or a regular pair of channel locks.
Safety: This seat is designed for use by children ages 5 to 12 only. The seat is to be used by one child at a time with a weight limit of 125lbs. Do not allow children to stand on the seat. Adult supervision is required at all times. Inspect the swing for proper installation and signs of damage/wear prior to use. If signs of vandalism or excessive wear is found, do not use the swing. Do not adjust the seat reclining position when in use. If you require further information, please do not hesitate to contact us at 1-800-433-2573. As always, if there are any questions or concerns regarding the use of this swing for a particular individual, contact their doctor for more information.
Maintenance: A monthly inspection/maintenance schedule is suggested to minimize the chance of injury. Check for cracks, rust, sharp edges, open S-hooks or shackles, worn harness straps, chains and eyebolts. Replace any worn, damaged or vandalized parts as needed. Check for exposed footings, anchoring devices, rocks, roots, holes and any other obstacles in or around the playground equipment. In high traffic areas, inspections should be performed more frequently. Cleaning the swing can be accomplished with mild soap and water. If you have multiple swings and wear is found on one swing, it is recommended to replace the worn parts on all swings that were purchased at the same time. Remove the swings from the playground when temperatures are below 0°F or above 100°F. To replace the V-chain, a 6’ length of chain is required. To replace the top piece of chain, a 15” piece of chain is required for an 8’ frame height. Please reference the previous chart for length of chain for different frame heights. A detailed record for all inspections and maintenance of the playground equipment is suggested to reduce the risk of injury.
Any damage due to vandalism, abuse or misuse VOIDS all warranties.
Colors: Black, Blue, Green, Red and Yellow. All swings come with a Yellow Yoke.
